Posted by nitrowheels | NitroWheels Ear Training application (mobile phones) | Friday 11 December 2009 7:20 PM

I’m releasing another ear training application I’ve developed and been using a lot in the past on a Nokia N73.

FEATURES:
- adjustable melody length
- adjustable delay before having the answer
- a speech synthesizer says the right interval(s)
- no need to look at the phone or to interrupt your training once you start! (so you can train almost everywhere!)

WHAT YOU GET – a short sample (settings here: 2 notes, 1 second before the answer). Recorded from a Nokia N73.

Nitrowheels Ear Training v0.5 (for Flash Lite 1.1 mobile phones & devices)

Posted by nitrowheels | NitroWheels Ear Training application (mobile phones) | Friday 15 May 2009 11:46 AM

Hello, I decided to release this ear training application I made some time ago for my mobile phone, to train myself everywhere.

It has been made for “internal use“, so use it at your own risk.

Requirements: I used (and I am still using) it on a NOKIA N73 mobile phone, but this software should work on every device supporting Flash Lite 1.1 and mp3 playback.

notes:
a) “Lite” is a different version of Flash running on some mobile phones and other devices
b) maybe you have a different screen resolution etc.

Please spread the word if you find it useful! (social networks etc.)

Features:

1. interval recognition

2. interval singing

3. chord recognition

4. short melody recognition

5. tuner

Please don’t redistribute/modify & please refer to this site to get the latest version. This software has been made publicly available just to be useful also to you and other people, thank you.

Use bluetooth / usb cable to transfer it to your mobile phone.

About the project:

after “The Joy of Our Time” (the track is here) now it’s the time for some House.

Details:

- time budget: 2 hours without interruption (the main goal is to see what comes out after 2h)

- main tools: Ableton Live 8 + Reason 4 + Reaktor 5

- project: from scratch, not from templates (every part, channel, effect etc.: created by hand on the fly)

- parts have been recorded live with an external midi keyboard controller (kick, snare, strings, hats, pads, bass, electric piano, etc.) to obtain a human feeling (playing ahead or behind the beat like jazz, velocity, etc.)

- selective quantization have been applied when needed

- use of some custom synth & sampler patches/samples

- use of eq/panning/automation curves/some filtering and compression

- love for jazz & for the “french touch” : )

What’s missing:

due to time constraints… a lot (tweakings, fx & co.). Use your ears to find out because it’s good training.

Thank you for listening and for your comments (and thank God for the Music),

Peace!

The Joy of Our Time

Posted by nitrowheels | Demo Music | Thursday 23 April 2009 7:53 PM

Hi, this is the second musical experiment of this kind, consisting of a micro deadline (2 hours) and a sonic fragment as the foundation.

A big thank you for all the feedback that I’ve got in response to the previous track, thank you so much! To me it’s great to know that you have found something of interest.

This time I wanted to paint with the music and to have a clear perception of time and space in the music.

I chose another original tune by Ambienteer, called “Blue Shift”, took a sonic portion of it and made it the base canvas; the resulting track is called

“The Joy of Our Time” (click “audio mp3″ to listen):

Here’s the outline: the dark colors are the low sounds, like the bass drum and the upright bass, the bright colors are the cymbals, the high notes of the electric piano, and so on. Here and there I wanted to break the timing, superimposing a different rhytmic cell over the other lines, without interrupting their flow or at least their feeling, creating multiple independent levels, sometimes with a little touch of “exaggerated human imperfection” to emphasize the idea.

I tried to keep a minimalistic approach, so I didn’t use any prominent guitar or synth sound.

The concept is to have a breathing and not intrusive musical background: rhythms… rest… rhythms…a gentle dance of colors.

Cheers!

Space Cargo Docking

Posted by nitrowheels | Demo Music | Wednesday 22 April 2009 10:23 PM

This audio track is a little experiment: some spontaneuous feedback to the fresh music and sounds of Ambienteer.

To accomplish this goal I forced myself to work without too much planning, by setting a short and fixed time budget: 2 hours.

I chose his track called “Almost Beige” and the result has been called

Space Cargo Docking” (click “audio mp3″ to listen):

space_cargo_docking

If you like, here is the quick outline:

I took an audio portion from the source, began programming synth patches and began playing reacting to the other sounds (at this pace it’s a form of electronic/rhythmic/melodic improvisation).

I tried to keep the length of the track almost the same compared to the original.

I began programming and then playing the bass line first, then the drum parts, using a midi keyboard controller.

I wanted to have some sort of “question and answer” in the short variation starting at 01′12″, so I took a guitar and made another synth sound to do exactly that.

The imaginary scene is this: a space cargo is passing in front of us; it’s a futuristic scene and that’s why we hear some “electronic noises” here and there; the mentioned short variation reflects a little tension during the docking operations (the space cargo shouldn’t collide, touch specific cables, etc.).

Ok… over time budget! That’s all, cheers!
